Trainee Scheme
The Blue Peris Trainee scheme has proved to be one of the bench mark schemes within the outdoor industry and has been running since 1980. Trainees have gone on later in their career to work at a variety of respected Outdoor Education Centres around the UK, including Plas y Brenin, Glenmore Lodge and various oversees schools and colleges. It has also proved an avenue for local Welsh speaking aspirant instructors to move their careers forward; we are proud to have made this valuable contribution to the local community.
Our scheme is quite unique as it prepares trainees for the competitive arena of freelance instruction. It also helps them for their next step ahead, whether this is a teaching degree, an outdoor instructor post, freelance instruction or becoming a teacher of outdoor education.
We usually employ two trainees for an 11 month period starting in the September of each year and finishing the following July.
We provide an opportunity for trainees to assist, work and be mentored alongside instructors and teachers who hold a variety of high level qualifications. Thus the trainees gain a high level of on-the-ground training and experience which is key to a successful career in Outdoor Education.
The centre delivers many sessions both on and off site so the trainees are able to gain a deep understanding of a wide range of outdoor activities; gorge walking, sea level traversing, mine exploration and sea kayaking are just some of the sessions we deliver.
In addition to this, the trainee’s facilitation skills will be greatly enhanced as they work with a wide range of educational courses and client groups.
In order to apply for the scheme a prospective trainee needs to meet the following criteria:
- Be over 21 years old.
- Have some history of personal climbing and paddling.
- Ideally will have started gaining NGB training courses.
- Enjoy working with young people.
- Looking for a career in the outdoor industry.
- Prepared to commit to working at a busy centre.
- Have some prior commitment to working with young people.
